Hot Chocolate Sparrow

Hot Chocolate Sparrow

 Sparrow Outside Sparrow Girl

The Hot Chocolate Sparrow is an amazing coffee shop that serves ice cream.  The shop is always busy and you can find it full at any time of the day.  With a wide array of coffee, cakes, chocolates, ice cream, juices, and more Hot Chocolate Sparrow is a great place to eat, snack, and visit.  Even though its always busy we found that the service is fast and accurate.  You can find a wide variety of people at the Sparrow, from “sea billy’s” in their mesh back cap, yuppies, elderly retirees, students, moms, dads, kids, even emo/goth kids.  They all get along, and all seem to be having a great time.

The atmosphere is wonderful with lots of art, and shiny things (yes I love shiny things) to look at on the walls.  The building lets in lots of natural sunlight and its always warm and smells of good food and drink.  The Hot Chocolate Sparrow is one of the best places to visit on the Cape.

Sparrow Icecream

The Sparrow specializes in coffee and hot chocolate, but they make a mean chocolate treat as well.  I recommend the light and dark chocolate cashew turtles.  While the ice cream is not homemade it is good.  Tess got the pumpkin ice cream and I got the death by chocolate.  They were both really good, the pumpkin was really really pumpkin’y, and the death by chocolate was really umm deathy.  Both were good and creamy but the pumpkin was kind of icy, and the serving was not very big for the price.

I agree with your rating on the ice cream, and it is true that the service is fast and accurate, however the servers themselves create a sort of Soup Nazi meets ice cream atmosphere. This place gets very busy, and if you are willing to forgo the actual relaxation of eating ice cream, just to have a pretty good scoop, then I would suggest going there. There are other places that have better ice cream and better attitudes.

This ice cream is shipped in from north of Boston from a manufacturer called Richardson. Decent ice cream, but mega distributed all over new england- I thought your reviews were for small Mom and Pop operations that made their own. If that in fact is not your criterion, why not put ben & jerry up there.

  3. Tess says:

You can walk into a Ben & Jerry’s, Coldstone, Friendly’s, etc. and EVERYTHING is the same: wall color, table shape, exact same ice cream you can buy in the store. When we walk up into a shop that sells Richardson’s, you do not know until you start looking at the list. Each location is unique with a different decor, atmosphere, and offerings (some have homemade cones, some have sundaes, etc.) We rank holistically, taking into to account things such as these. Additionally, it is all a learning process. Again, since we don’t know until we hit the flavors list that it is Richardson’s we cannot avoid these places. We are trying to take soem of the mystery out of finding a good ice cream shop for you, the reader, and sometimes that means eating ice cream that is mass distributed, but not a franchise.
