“Oh you have to go to Sundae School, its the best!” I kept hearing that from a lot of people. So with high hopes Tess and I traveled to the Dennis Port for our first scoop of this highly touted cream.
The outside was nice with that old timey feel I have come to expect from Cape Cod. There was even a nice little bird house that I thought was very cute.
There was also ample seating and some very nice marble tables, a very classy act. When we went inside we found a lovely (if a bit dark) interior with lots of fun things to look at. Local sports pennants, pictures of baseball teams, it was very all American. You can tell that the ice cream shop if very involved with local sports teams and is a good member of the community.
The ice cream at Sundae School is advertised as home made and (gasp!) is actually made on premises every day no less. So few places we have been to that advertise as home made are actually made at home, that is at the shop. Most are made in Boston or in western MA and shipped to the cape. So far Sundae School was living up to the hype.
Tess got the Bass River Mudd (named after a local river), and I got the Cookie Dough. For the price (2.75) the serving was a little small. But the service was really good, Tess and I were playing “pretend to be tourists” so when I told the lady “we are playing pretending to be tourists, can we take pictures of everything?” she laughed and said “sure.” Clearly superior service. We went outside to dig in and that is when it happened. All of our Sundae School dreams began to crumble. With each bite we realized that well, to put it nicely, the ice cream just wasn’t that good. It wasn’t bad, that wasn’t the problem. It just wasn’t awesome. And from what we had heard we were expecting awesome, in fact from the hype we were expecting little mouth extravaganzas, little fireworks that would blow all our teeth out the front of our heads.
But instead we got, well average. The ice cream was good, it wasn’t icy, and it tasted good, but so does the stuff you get from the store. We could have gotten almost an entire pint of store bought and sat around gorging ourselves.
Ultimately that was the problem, the ice cream. The store was great, the service great, but the ice cream couldn’t back up the hype. On the way home we discussed that perhaps we should have got a sundae, I mean they are called Sundae School. Perhaps we will go back and research some more.

We are from the midwest and we here have many ice cream houses. But so far when we go to the Cape Sundae Schools is a must. The Bass River Mudd might not be to bad, but Cookie Dough,,, no wonder you weren’t overly excited with the taste. Sorry, in my book thats a kids flavor, and not to be compared. I may not be a big conisour of ice cream but I know good from bad, and This place is more like a four coner to our family and a near five. Maybe the weather did something to the mix that day. Please give them one more try. But then again ice cream is in the eyes or mouth of the eater, we all have our likes and that is why there are so many. For us we still love Sundae Schools and still think highly of it. Good luck next time.
Thanks for the tip, we are planning on trying again, but with so many other places on cape to get to it might be a while. We thought the ice cream was good, just not great.
[...] So we waited with baited breath for opening day. The anticipation growing with each passing day. Would the flavors be as good as everyone said, or would the place be all hype like Sundae School, we waited to find out. [...]
Hi Shane,
Nice idea with the ice cream focus. I agree with Stephen G. that Sundae School is the real deal! Been going there for years (from Sandwich) and it is always worth the trip! They are exactly what a Cape Cod ice cream store is all about - friendly employees, unique decor, great atmosphere, and the best ice cream!

Hey Shane, Sorry to hear you didn’t like the ice cream that much. I live on Cape Cod and it’s definitely the best place on the whole cape. Next time you go,which i hope you do, I would reccommend the Coffee- Oreo, it’s the best flavor… EVER! Haha, i do agree about hte service, all of the employees are wicked nice, and i’ve never had a bad experience.

Sundae School’s is the best ice cream I’ve had on Cape Cod. You have to judge by the basics - vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Their versions are not too sugary. you can taste the ice cream. Cookie Dough and Bass River Mudd are terrible picks - not good ice cream flavors - too much junk in them. They do not taste like ice cream - they taste like Ben and Jerry’s instead.
Well it’s obvious you weren’t that thrilled! You only had half the experience! Not only does Sundae School make their own ice cream…they make their own whipped cream. It’s amazing. Also, they use real bing cherries. And cookie dough? There’s only so much thrill you can get from cookie dough..at every ice cream place. I really insist you go back and get the real experience!!
We are planning a return trip soon, due to popular demand we will try a sundae school sunday. The people have spoken, and we will respond.
Look for a suplemental review soon.
I’m glad to hear you’re returning to Sundae School. Try the Oreo ice cream. Yes, it’s a basic flavor; but few places can makng really good Oreo ice cream.
