Chad’s Ice Cream
What first caught my eye when we approached Chad’s Ice Cream was the “all American” feel to the place. It had the little red white and blue half circle flag things… It has the penny candy, and the tubs of ice cream for viewing. Pretty standard all American ice cream shop stuff.
The store has a bevy of “old school” candy. Perfect to relive childhood memories or to get the kids a little pre-hyped before the main sugar bomb. An important safety note for parents, the amount of ice cream served at Chad’s in a small is…. a lot, be warned your kids may become so hyper after eating the candy and ice cream that they could begin to bounce so fast as to create a time vortex, and break the space time continuum. Consider your self warned.
The woman behind the counter (more of a young lady really) was polite and helpful when it came to choosing flavors. She recommended some of her favorites and let us try some samples. Good stuff.
Tess got the Cake Batter, a lovely mix of well…cake batter and ice cream. It was good and tasted exactly like cake batter tastes. I got the Maine black bear. It involves raspberry filled chocolate covered truffles, and raspberry ice cream. While that sounds like it would be super-mega-awesome, I unfortunately found it to be simply sorta-awesome. There were not enough chocolate truffle berry thingers in the ice cream, and you really couldn’t tell there was truffle in them.
The ice cream was good, and boy do you get a lot for a small at Chad’s. THESE SCOOPS WERE HUMONGOUS! You honestly could have fed two people with one small. Unfortunately they came in Styrofoam cups, which is really not needed, as who really waits around for the ice cream to melt before eating it? I know we didn’t.
In the end however nothing really stood out. The ice cream was good, but not great. It was tasty, but not exquisite, flavorful but not rich. We both thought it was average.
We saw that they offered the “Chad cone” which is a large waffle cone with the inside covered in chocolate and then further covered with your choice of candy, nuts, or jimmies (where I come from we call jimmies sprinkles). These looked really good, but at $4.75 they were a bit out of our price range.
For a HUGE! scoop at a low price Chads is the place to go. You will enjoy its Americana, and always go home full.
