Whistle Stop Ice Cream
In our never ending quest to find the best ice cream on Cape cod, Tess and I stopped by Whistle Stop Ice Cream. You have to admire a place that picks a theme and sticks with it. I mean really goes crazy with it. Whistle Stop Ice Cream just off of memorial beach does just that.
The Stop (as we have taken to calling it around the office) is not in an ideal location. It is crammed into a tiny little strip mall type place next to a Cumberland Farms. This means there is never enough parking. However there is ample seating inside, and the beach is a 2 second stroll away, so it’s not all that bad.
The first thing that greets you when you enter “The Stop” is the jingling of a nice bell and before you can do anything you are awash in train stuff. Train Posters, model trains, train related food items, old train stock tickets, train signs, and the grand daddy of them all, A fully functional model train that zooms around the store while you eat.
We were greeted by someone who looked like maybe they were at the end of a long shift. They were polite and attentive but you could tell the hard life of an ice cream jockey had beaten the will to live out of them (as any of us that have had part time jobs knows about.) My personal theory is that the gaggle of super loud women in the corner talking about adult subject matter while little kids walked by, might have had something to do with the long face.
I got death by chocolate in a waffle cone (an extra 80 cents but well worth it), this involved chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips, and chocolate swirls. Tess got Mocha Chip, coffee ice cream with chocolate chips in it.
The ice cream was tasty, but average. It was rich and creamy with a low ice content, but it just didn’t pop. The waffle cone was really good and added a lot to the cream. The chocolate chips were not the cheap waxy kind, but they were no high class chocolate either. Over all I was happy with the death by chocolate, but it could have use a little more swirls. Tess likes to get coffee flavored ice cream (anything coffee flavored makes me want to vomit) so I have to take her word for it, but she said hers was also good but average.
If you are train buff, you owe it to yourself to check this store out, it has a large working model train set that moves around the store. It also features ample train related kitch. This place is a must see for train fans.
The Whistle Stop Ice Cream shop has a lot of character and a decent scoop of ice cream. I would recommend it to anyone that is hanging around Bourne, or Monument Beach. While you are there walk across the street and see the train stop that the store gets its name from. It’s an interesting old land mark.
