When you enter Hallet’s Homemade Ice Cream you are whisked back in time. You are magically transported to a simpler time, a time when people said hello on the street, a time when people drove model T’s, and a time when you could buy opium at the drug store.
Hallet is located in an old drug store. Inside is a wonderful assortment of old drug store kitch. They even have all of those little boxes in the wall, with labels written in Latin, boxes that once contained things like sulfur and carbon and who knows what else.
Hallets also recreates the old soda fountain feel. You and your sweet heart can go for a tonic, or perhaps get a milk shake with two straws. And then there is the bear…
The staff at Hallet’s seem to be strangely preoccupied with “the bear” its on the menu, behind the counter, on the tip jar, even on the website. It makes claims like “tip or the bear will eat you.” Over all very cute and also very weird.
We had read about Hallet’s in the Lonely Planet travel guide and it claimed that it was one of the best in New England. What we found however was just another Richardson’s ice cream reseller. OH! the sign claims “homemade” but it isn’t. And its not alone. Many places on Cape Cod seem to claim homemade when in fact they get it off a truck.
The ice cream at Hallet’s tasted average at best. I made the mistake of getting the strawberry again, and again was met with super frozen strawberry chunks. Tess got some sort of coffee confection and found it enjoyable but average as well. Seriously this place has such a neat look and feel its a real shame that they don’t make there own ice cream. The serving size was kind of on the small side as well.
If you want to check out a wonderful location and have some average ice cream stop by Hallet’s. If you want to try really good ice cream, go someplace else.
