McGee’s Ice Cream
While waiting around for the storm that wasn’t, Beryle, we decided if this was the end we wanted to go out eating ice cream. Our brave companions in a double date of doom were Jen and Perry.
We charted our course to McGee’s on main street Hyannis. Jen and Perry are ambitious ice cream reviewers in training. They have often expressed their desire to “have our job.” Little did they know the trials and tribulations that come with such a task. To break them in a little we decided that a stint as guest taster was needed.
The first thing we had to teach them was how to choose which ice cream flavor to get. This is a lot harder than you would think. After 20 some shops you get a little jaded with the usual flavors. They wanted to just run right up to the window and order, total rookie mistake. Choosing the flavor involves a lot of indecisive chatter, side conversations, laughing and if the place is good free samples.
After a suitable amount of joking around and talking we decided upon our flavors. McGee’s is a Bliss Ice Cream distributor. We have had good luck with Bliss, with this in mind I got the strawberry cheese cake, Tess and Jen got the cake batter, and Perry got some sort of chocolate flavor (which has been lost as in our fun we didn’t write it down).
McGees has a walk up window, but also an interior counter. This is a nice touch and would serve people well on rainy days (of which this was not one, even though it threatened constantly). They have a nice little seating area out front, but I could not see any seating inside.
Main street Hyannis is a great place to people watch. A steady stream of tourists and locals wandered by. If you are in the mood you can even get your future told next door at the psychic.
McGee’s ice cream was good. Bliss makes a good scoop. Its creamy, has low ice content, and overall is pretty rich. The problem is that McGee’s is right across the street from Katie’s Homemade Ice Cream. If this is a David and Goliath fight, McGee’s is Goliath because they are gonna get knocked the !@#* out.
It’s hard for McGee’s star to shine when they are in the glaring light of Katie’s. They sling a good scoop, but Katie’s slings a grand scoop. Jen, Tess, Perry, and myself all agreed that the ice cream was good, Jen and Perry did offer that larger chunks of add-ins would have been better, and that the menu needed to be re-done for more clarity. The size is average and unfortunately they use plastic cups.
If you are walking down Main Street and don’t feel like crossing the street, give McGee’s a try. They serve a good scoop, for a pretty good price, and the seating area is a wonderful place to sit and stop for an hour. Resist the draw of the hypnotically delicious Katie’s across the street and you will get a nice scoop you can share with your friends.

The cake batter ice cream is by far my favorite. Good atmosphere and very polite! I’ll definetely be visiting McGee’s the next time I visit the Cape!! The Del’s lemonade was delicious!
We visited McGee’s Ice Cream in late July and were thoroughly impressed with this new business. The young man at the window was friendly and helpful. He offered samples of any kind of ice cream that we wanted to try. YUM!! We tried four before we settled on the delicious strawberry cheesecake flavor. Our kids LOVED the Flavor burst ice cream. What fun they had choosing the flavors to swirl into their cones! We will be back next year.
Super cute ice cream shop on the main strip in Hyannis. It was a little drizzly, so we sat inside at the little soda fountain-esque tables. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. Formerly a patron of Katie’s ice cream across the street, I have found a new favorite - McGee’s will be my “ice cream-eating, people-watching” spot from this point forward :)
Great Ice cream!!! Now has inside seating, sandwiches, Doles Frozen lemonade, ice cream pizza(no real pizza in it), and much more! A++
