Jimmy’s
Sunday, July 1st, 2007What to say about Jimmy’s? Let start with the good stuff. First off Jimmy’s is in a pretty awesome location. Just off the main drag in Woods Hole.
From the shop you can hear the sea gulls cry, and the deep sound of the ferry boat horn.
It has a nice “beach front” shop kind of feel, with a small seating area out front, and ample seating within.
They even have a nice coconut pirate head. The servers were nice, and the place was clean.
A nice window box. Unfortunately all is not flowers and pirate heads at Jimmy’s. Tess and I hate giving out bad reviews. I mean ice cream is ice cream, and as such it’s hard to be “bad.” There are however things about Jimmy’s that could be a lot better.
For one the ice cream is not homemade (they use Bliss ice cream), not a deal killer but a portent of things to come. They also charge 3.15 for a small, also not a deal breaker, as other places have charged more. The straw that broke our camels back however was the size of the scoop.
Note that those are not huge spoons but rather the “standard” size. For $3.15 you could almost buy a pint of Ben and Jerry’s at the grocery store. You may be asking, “but what did it taste like?”
Fearing bandits we brought along Tess’ sister Kate to help us taste test. It is a little known fact but bandits fear Tess’ sister, its the red hair, and ninja skills (she also has nunchuck skills). Tess got the banana nut fudge, I got the moose tracks, and Kate got the Toffee nut crunch. I found the moose tracks to be a bit milky, but passable. It tasted like ice cream you would buy from the store. The banana nut fudge was lacking flavor and the fudge was more of a coloring than something your taste buds would care about. The real gem of the three was Toffee Crunch. Kate “really really really really really liked” the toffee crunch. She raved about it while Tess and I looked on jealously.
So to warp up, Jimmy’s sells average ice cream, at high prices, and small portions. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to Jimmy’s, it just means you should buy a sandwich and get your ice cream someplace else.
