SCOOPER BOWL SUCCESS!
Tuesday, June 19th, 2007Shane and I (and my sister!) had the privilege of volunteering this year at the 25th Annual Scooper Bowl in Boston, which benefits the Jimmy Fund. Last year was the first year had even heard about it and was disappointed when I had to miss the event.
BUT this year, we were ready. Months ago I started looking for volunteer registration online and luckily Kate, Shane, and I were chosen as volunteers! AND WHAT AN EVENT!!
We were spoon-distributors, handing people their weapons as they walked through the giant cone-shaped entrance into the ice cream wonderland that is the Scooper Bowl. For only $7 (about the cost of 2 small cones at a Cape ice cream shop) ice cream fans were able to eat all they could on some of the biggest names in ice cream. Baskin-Robbins, Breyers, Ben & Jerry’s, Bringham’s, Cold Stone Creamery, Edy’s, Elan, Garelick, Haagen-Dazs, and Hood DONATED all the ice cream for the event and thoroughly satisfied their guests, distributing both classic flavors such as vanilla and chocolate to new, exotic flavors such as pineapple coconut and Dice-Kream.
Our time at the Scooper Bowl flew by as the perpetual stream of people accepted our spoons and smiles. When the next crew of volunteers took over, it was our turn to partake in the delight. Eating about 10 samples (each sample is a generous scoop of ice cream, so about 10 scoops of ice cream!), I was stuffed. My mouth wanted to press on but my stomach would not have it. My measly 10 scoops did not compare to number of samples other had tasted, apparent by the stack of empty sample cups they were carrying around like badges of honor. Now knowing what I am up against, I will go into training before next year so I can compete with the great ice cream eaters I saw (and be able try more flavors!)
If you missed the Scooper Bowl this year, put it on your 2008 calender now so that you don’t miss another opportunity to enjoy Boston at its best and of course, help the Jimmy Fund raise money.
Thanks to everyone that organized the Scooper Bowl, you did a wonderful job and I look forward to next year!
